Arsenal news: Gunners open talks for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko as new striker a priority

Arsenal have started negotiations with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig over the signing of Benjamin Sesko.

The Gunners, who finished second in the Premier League for the third successive season, have been in dire need of a new centre-forward for some time.

Injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus saw the North Londoners’ campaign fall apart, with Mikel Merino deployed as a makeshift striker since January.

Although it appears that Arsenal have made a new frontman their number one priority this summer.

Andrea Berta hard at work

According to Sky Sports Germany, Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta has met with his RB Leipzig counterpart Marcel Schäfer in London over a potential move for Sesko.

The Slovenian has a release clause set at over €80million, with the Gunners in talks over the payment structure of a potential deal.

Mikel Arteta & Co. reportedly already have an agreement in place with the player, as per TNATS via Patreon.

Sporting centre-forward Viktor Gyökeres is also still high up on Arsenal’s summer shopping list.

January interest

The Gunners are long-standing admirers of Sesko and made several enquiries over the 21-year-old’s availability in January.

While a move never materialised during the winter transfer window, it is no surprise to see Arsenal reignite their interest in the Slovenian international.

Benjamin Sesko on fire

Benjamin Sesko celebrates a goal in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig.

In a superb season that saw Sesko bag 21 goals and 6 assists in all competitions, it is no wonder that Arteta is so keen on bringing the Slovenian to North London.

Standing at 6’4, Sesko would offer Arsenal a massive presence in the box, one that they have missed since the days of Oliver Giroud.

With Nicholas Jover transforming the Gunners into one of the deadliest sides on the planet from set-pieces, Sesko could run rampant alongside the likes of defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

Undoubtedly clinical and still young, the Radeče-born forward would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal, who could lead the line at the Emirates Stadium for years to come.
