Chelsea women sign Alyssa Thompson in potential record deal

Chelsea Women have completed the signing of United States international Alyssa Thompson from NWSL side Angel City FC. The 20-year-old winger has agreed a five-year contract that runs until 2030.

The transfer is believed to be worth around £1.1 million upfront, with performance-related add-ons that could take the total fee to a world-record level.

If those conditions are met, it would surpass the current record held by midfielder Grace Geyoro, who moved from Paris Saint-Germain to newly promoted London City Lionesses for $1.9m.

A rising star

Thompson is considered one of the brightest young players in women’s football. She already has 22 appearances for the US Women’s National Team and was the first overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft when Angel City selected her straight out of high school.

Her pace, dribbling and ability to play on either wing made her one of the standout talents in the league.

Chelsea’s head of women’s football, Paul Green, described Thompson as “a dynamic winger with electric pace, who can play on either wing and is very good in one-on-one situations.”

Chelsea’s ambitions and the impact on Angel City

The club sees her as a key addition as they look to maintain domestic dominance and chase further success in the Women’s Champions League.

For Angel City, the departure of their star player is a major loss as they battle for a playoff place in the NWSL.

But the transfer underlines the increasing financial power of Europe’s top clubs and the growing scale of deals in the women’s game.
