Premier League analysis: What were the biggest deals of Deadline Day? Alexander Isak, Piero Hincapie and more

Deadline Day has come and gone, after what has been a record-breaking summer for the Premier League, in which clubs have spent a whopping £3.19billion on new signings.

In comparison, clubs from the English top-flight spent more than the entirety of those in the Bundesliga, LaLiga, Ligue 1 and Serie A combined.

Arsenal and Liverpool both had a huge net spend of well over £200million as they go head-to-head for the Premier League title.

While newly-promoted Sunderland outspent the likes of Manchester City and West Ham United, with £162million going on reinforcements.

There was plenty to take in on Deadline Day, and here, Transfer News Blitz’s Edward Moss has broken down all the biggest deals.

Gianluigi Donnarumma

Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester City

All attention was firmly on departures at the Etihad Stadium as the summer window drew to a close, with the likes of Ederson, Manuel Akanji and Ilkay Gundogan all leaving Manchester City.

But Pep Guardiola did make one addition to his squad.

Gianluigi Donnarumma signed for the Cityzens for a reported £26million, having played a starring role in Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph last term.

The Italian haunted English sides in Europe last season, being a standout performer against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool in the knockout stages.

However, with James Trafford rejoining City earlier in the summer, what does Donnarumma’s arrival mean for the Englishman?

The 22-year-old has started all three of Manchester City’s Premier League matches this season, but mistakes against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion have led to losses.

This is certainly a situation that will develop throughout the season, with neither goalkeeper likely happy to play second-fiddle.

Alexander Isak

Newcastle United to Liverpool

In what has been THE transfer saga of the summer, Alexander Isak finally got his move to Liverpool on Deadline Day.

The Reds paid a British record £130million fee for the Swedish forward, taking the amount they had spent on new signings up to a reported £415million.

Of course, Newcastle United did not let their star man leave easily, with the 25-year-old releasing a statement in hopes of forcing the deal through.

It seemed at one point that Isak was destined to be left to rot in the North East, but the Magpies decided to cash in on Deadline Day.

With the likes of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Jerimie Frimpong also summer additions at Anfield, Arne Slot’s men are now clear favourites to retain their Premier League title.

Yoane Wissa

Brentford to Newcastle United

From one transfer saga to another, Yoane Wissa took a page out of Isak’s book and released a statement in the hope of securing a move away from Brentford.

Ironically, that move was in fact to St. James’ Park, where Newcastle splashed out £55million on the DR Congo international.

Alongside fellow new signing Nick Woltemade, the Magpies are clearly looking to move on from Isak as quickly as possible.

On the surface, this deal looks to be a good one, and with 19 Premier League goals last season, Wissa could have an instant impact.

Piero Hincapie

Bayer Leverkusen to Arsenal

Known for having the best defence in the Premier League, Mikel Arteta made another late addition to his impenetrable wall at the Emirates Stadium.

As Jakub Kiwior left Arsenal for FC Porto, in came Piero Hincapie from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

The Gunners reportedly got another one over their noisy neighbours, Tottenham Hotspur, who were also understood to be interested in the Ecuadorian.

Of course, Eberechi Eze snubbed Spurs in favour of a move to Arsenal, following a late intervention from Andrea Berta.

Brought in on an initial loan, it is highly likely that Hincapie’s move to N5 will be made permanent next summer.

Able to play as centre-back or left-back, the 23-year-old looks to be an excellent signing.

Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea to FC Bayern

For a time, it looked as though Nicolas Jackson’s move to FC Bayern was going to fall through, following an unfortunate injury to Liam Delap.

Despite 15 Premier League goal involvements last season, the Senegalese striker was deemed surplus to requirements by Enzo Maresca this summer.

The 24-year-old was stranded in Munich as the Bundesliga champions looked for a resolution with Chelsea, which they eventually did.

Although it is safe to say that the Blues certainly got the better of the Bavarians.

Vincent Kompany’s side signed Jackson on a season-long loan – a deal which included a huge £16million loan fee and a monstrous obligation to buy that could reach up to £70million.

For a backup to Harry Kane, FC Bayern have certainly splashed the cash…

Bertrand Traore and Brian Brobbey

Ajax to Sunderland

In the wake of that injury to Delap, Marc Guiu was swiftly recalled from his loan at the Stadium of Light, having made just three appearances for Sunderland.

The Black Cats acted fast, though, bringing in Ajax duo Bertrand Traore and Brian Brobbey.

While certainly not two of the most overwhelming signings from Deadline Day, they are definitely smart additions by Regis Le Bris.

Brobbey is an out-and-out goalscorer – even though he managed just seven goals in all competitions last season, the year prior, he bagged 22 goals and 11 assists.

If Sunderland can get the best out of the Dutchman, they could have easily added 10-15 goals to their tally this campaign.

Not to forget Traore either, who has Premier League experience with Aston Villa and Chelsea.

The 29-year-old’s best campaign came in the 2020/21 season, when his 14 goal contributions helped Villa to an 11th-place finish.

Signing someone of Premier League proven ability will surely end up as an important addition over the course of a long season.
