Newcastle Utd news: Magpies close to Aaron Ramsdale deal after James Trafford snub
Newcastle United are set to complete a deal for Southampton shot stopper Aaron Ramsdale.
The Magpies have had a frustrating summer so far, having missed out on several key targets.
Paired with Alexander Isak’s rumoured departure, Eddie Howe & Co. certainly have their work cut out.
Swedish international Anthony Elanaga stands as Newcastle’s only major signing in a deal worth £55million.
Aaron Ramsdale deal close
Aaron Ramsdale saves low.
The Carabao Cup holders are close to striking an agreement with freshly-relegated Southampton to bring Ramsdale to St. James’ Park.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have scheduled fresh talks with the Saints and will include an option to make the move permanent.
The English goalkeeper is understood to be keen to join the Magpies ahead of the upcoming campaign.
From James Trafford to Aaron Ramsdale
Having qualified for the Champions League last season, it is no secret that Howe has been looking to reinforce several key positions.
Nick Pope has firmly been the first-choice between the sticks, however, Newcastle have been working to bring in some serious competition for the 33-year-old this summer.
The North East outfit had prioritised a move for newly-promoted James Trafford, but that deal collapsed.
The 22-year-old opted to rejoin his boyhood club, Manchester City, in a deal worth £27million.
With City set to confirm the capture of Trafford, Newcastle quickly shifted their attention to Ramsdale.
Is Aaron Ramsdale any good?
Aaron Ramsdale and Southampton were relegated last season.
It is safe to say that the Englishman does not have the best record in the Premier League.
With three relegations from the top-flight with three different clubs, Ramsdale certainly has an unwanted reputation.
The 27-year-old has faced the drop with AFC Bournemouth, Sheffield United and Southampton.
However, it would be harsh to solely point the finger at Ramsdale, who has been a part of some pretty dreadful squads.
Following a breakthrough season in 2019, the England international has firmly established himself as one of the best shot stoppers in the country.
Not to forget a strong three-year spell at Arsenal, only being pushed out of the Emirates Stadium by the brilliance of David Raya.
It is unlikely that Ramdale will displace Pope straight away, but he will certainly push his fellow countryman for the starting spot at Newcastle.
