Liverpool news: Florian Wirtz set to join Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield with agreement close

Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

Arne Slot is set to completely overhaul his squad this summer, despite the Dutchman lifting the Premier League title in his maiden campaign on Merseyside.

The Reds have already splashed €35million on right-back Jeremie Frimpong, also from Leverkusen, to replace the outgoing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Real Madrid paid Liverpool €10million to sign the 26-year-old a month early ahead of the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

Liverpool close to Florian Wirtz deal

According to Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool submitted an offer worth €130million for Wirtz last week.

Bayer Leverkusen are yet to accept the bid, with talks over the payment structure and potential add-ons still underway.

However, it is understood to only be a matter of time until an agreement is reached, with Wirtz keen on a move to Anfield.

The Reds have beaten off interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City for the German.

What makes Florian Wirtz so good?

Following a stellar few years in West Germany, Wirtz has firmly established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders on the planet.

After hitting 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions this season, it is now seemingly a common theme for the German international to hit double figures.

Last season, Wirtz led Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title, in which they went unbeaten, with a whopping 38 goal contributions.

The 22-year-old is a superb ball carrier and oozes with creativity, registering 3.13 successful dribbles and 2.18 created chances per 90 minutes in the German top flight this campaign.

While primarily an attacking midfielder, Wirtz can also be deployed on either flank, which could prove useful in a long season.

However, likely to play in the middle of the park, the Reds could have one of the most exciting midfields in Europe with the German side-by-side with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
