Man City news: Florian Wirtz edges towards Bayern Munich move as City search for Kevin De Bruyne heir

Despite enduring a poor campaign by their standards, Manchester City are hot on the heels of second-placed Arsenal in the Premier League.

The Cityzens' normal air of dominance in the top-flight has faltered this season, with their hopes of Champions League qualification seeming bleak at the turn of the year.

Pep Guardiola splashed £180million on January reinforcements to help turn City’s fortunes around, bringing in Omar Marmoush, Nico González, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

With Kevin De Bruyne set to leave the club at the end of the season, it is heating up to be a busy summer at the Etihad Stadium, as Man City look to replace the legendary Belgian.

Florian Wirtz move in jeopardy?

Manchester City have been long-time admirers of Florian Wirtz and see the German as the ‘ideal replacement’ for De Bruyne.

However, according to Sky Sports Germany, the 22-year-old is more likely to stay in the Bundesliga and join Bayern Munich.

The midfielder's camp reportedly have a clear plan to join the German champions and possibly move abroad at some point in the future.

Although not all hope is lost for Guardiola & Company, with negotiations yet to take place between the two clubs.

City would also likely be able to offer more cash up front for Wirtz, who is set to cost well over £100million, compared to the Bavarians.

Why is Florian Wirtz so sought after?

With 29 goal contributions in 43 matches this campaign, it is no surprise to see Europe’s best clubs circling the German international.

The attacking midfielder was integral in Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title win last season, where he bagged 18 goals and 20 assists in all competitions.

Wirtz has consistently been one of the best attacking midfielders in the world for some time now, and is probably deserving of his huge price tag.

Whether it be Manchester City or Bayern Munich, or even Leverkusen, Wirtz will likely flourish wherever he ends up.
