Wrexham analysis: AI predicts moves for Callum Robinson and Harry Darling after Red Dragons’ EFL Championship promotion
Following Wrexham’s unprecedented back-to-back-to-back promotions from the National League to the Championship, the Red Dragons are back in the second tier of the Football League for the first time since 1982.
With that, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have got a huge task on their hands to get Phil Parkinson’s side up to scratch over the summer.
Ever the gentleman, Transfer News Blitz’s Edward Moss has decided to help the Hollywood duo out and asked X’s Artificial Intelligence, Grok, to predict Wrexham’s upcoming transfer window.
Callum Robinson, Cardiff City
Linked with a move to North East Wales, Grok has identified Cardiff City forward Callum Robinson as a highly likely signing this summer.
Welsh rivals Cardiff were relegated to League One this season, so they could be forced to sell their top talent.
While not a huge name, the 30-year-old is a versatile and experienced forward, bagging 12 goals during the Bluebirds' dreadful Championship campaign.
Having also previously played for Preston North End, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United and Bristol City, Robinson would be a solid and realistic addition for Wrexham.
Patrick Bamford, Leeds United
Arguably, the most high-profile player suggested by Grok, Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford, was part of the Whites’ promotion-winning squad.
In a season plagued by injuries, the Englishman was unable to find the net once in 17 Championship appearances.
With a wealth of Premier League and EFL experience, the 31-year-old could prove to be a useful signing, but with his shocking injury record, poor output and huge wages, Wrexham should steer clear.
Harry Darling, Swansea City
Taking recent reports into account, Grok has predicted another cross-Wales move, this time for Swansea City defender Harry Darling.
Out of contract in the summer, the centre-back would be an absolute bargain for Wrexham if they can agree a deal with the Englishman.
Fellow promoted side Birmingham City are reportedly also keen, but the Red Dragons have the financial means to offer Darling competitive wages.
With five goals this season, the 25-year-old would slot into Parkinson’s backline and provide a huge aerial threat.
Greg Docherty, Charlton Athletic
Linked with a move to the Racecourse back in 2024, Grok reckons Wrexham could revisit their former interest in Greg Docherty.
After struggling for game time at Hull City, the Scotsman moved to Charlton Athletic last summer, where his talents have shone through.
The 28-year-old has led the Addicks to the League One play-offs, where Nathan Jones’ men played out a 0-0 draw with Wycombe Wanderers in the first leg.
If Charlton fail to gain promotion to the Championship, Docherty could surely be tempted to Wales by Wrexham.
Marvin Ekpiteta, Hibernian
Another player Wrexham have formally been interested in, Grok has suggested that Parkinson & Co. should reignite their interest in defender Marvin Ekpiteta.
Following a move to Scotland after leaving Blackpool last summer, the centre-back has struggled to get back into the Hibernian starting lineup after he was sidelined with a thigh injury in November.
While it certainly feels as though Wrexham have moved on from Ekpiteta, especially with a move for Darling likely, the 29-year-old could still be a viable option for the Red Dragons.
Although with two years left on his current Hibs contract, the Englishman could cost a pretty penny that may be better invested elsewhere.
Of course, Grok is only an AI, so take its predictions with a pinch of salt.
Wrexham are likely to sign more than five players who will be of a higher calibre, but a couple of these additions would certainly be a great start to life in the Championship.
