Aston Villa analysis: How Jacob Ramsey’s departure could spell trouble for Unai Emery

The transfer window has been uneventful for Aston Villa to say the least, but with two weeks left, it is finally heating up.

West Ham United are rumoured to submit a £30-£40million bid for Jacob Ramsey, who has been a massive part of Aston Villa’s team.

Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Harrison Pearce examines how the English midfielder’s departure from Villa could disrupt their upcoming campaign.

PSR holding Premier League teams back

Aston Villa have among the wealthiest and most ambitious owners in the Premier League.

But they have had to exploit a PSR loophole by selling their women’s team to comply with the financial regulations before the end of the June deadline.

Aston Villa have had to tiptoe around PSR this summer, and that is why there have not been many incomings so far.

As another transfer window almost passes by, full of transfer rumours, it looks like Aston Villa will have to sacrifice one of their own in Ramsey.

The Hammers look to be in pole position to get the 24-year-old's signature over the line.

It is looking increasingly likely that Villa will once again have to sell to buy, and allowing Ramsey to leave could set the wave for one or two signings to replace him.

However, it could have been a lot worse for the Midlands club because at the end of last season, it was looking incredibly likely that a few of Villa’s stars, including Emiliano Martinez, Ollie Watkins, and Leon Bailey, might be set to exit the club.

However, as of yet, none of them have actually left, which is a positive.

Unai Emery has a massive squad at his disposal; he just needs to get the best out of his team to replicate their form since the Spaniard joined from Villarreal.

What Jaocb Ramsey’s exit means for Aston Villa

Jacob Ramsey on the ball for Aston Villa.

Ramsey has been an excellent servant to Aston Villa ever since breaking through under Dean Smith.

The English midfielder was starting to come into his own for the Villains in the left wing position, and once Morgan Rogers arrived, the 24-year-old has struggled to gain regular first-team minutes.

Another huge factor was due to Ramsey’s injury worries, as he sustained a metatarsal fracture in his left foot while playing for England's U21s.

Ramsey missed the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season due to the injury.

He returned to play for Villa but re-injured the same foot after only a few appearances.

After returning from his major injury, the Englishman has become a stable backup to Rogers and still has room to grow within the Premier League.

But we have not seen it consistently enough for around two years now, so West Ham are getting a good player, but it also is not the end of the world if he does leave, either.

When you compare Ramsey to Aston Villa’s main forwards, they provide more contributions than he does.

Jacob Ramsey’s key attributes

In 136 games, Ramsey has only scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists, so West Ham fans should not be expecting him to set the world alight as a Mohammed Kudus replacement.

However, even though Ramsey doesn’t score many goals, he provides much more than that, like the ability to drive forward with the ball, being able to keep hold of it and recycle possession when needed.

He is a good player who will improve Graham Potter’s side but he is not a natural Kudus replacement as they have different skillsets.

It will be sad to see Ramsey leave Aston Villa because he has been massively involved in the club’s fast development over recent seasons.

Paves the way for more signings

However, if it means Aston Villa could sign one or two players to improve their squad, then this deal could only be a good thing.

Aston Villa have been linked to potentially re-signing Marco Asensio on loan after his deal to Fenerbahçe looks off and Galatasaray’s Brazilian star Gabriel Sara in a deal worth around £30-35million.

The Villa fans will be waiting in anticipation for the last two weeks to see who leaves and walks through the door at Bodymoor Heath before the new season starts on August 15.
