Bayer Leverkusen news: Three possible replacements for Xabi Alonso as Bundesliga exit looms
Xabi Alonso announced his departure from Bayer Leverkusen last week, with a move to Real Madrid now likely.
After an unbeaten campaign in the Bundesliga last year and a German Cup to add to his success, the 43-year-old has been Real’s top target to replace the outgoing Carlo Ancelotti.
Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Adam Beresford has looked at three options to replace the Spaniard at the BayArena.
Erik ten Hag
Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been rumoured as a frontrunner to take over the German side.
During the Dutchman’s two-year stint at Old Trafford, he won 72 out of 128 matches and led the Red Devils to a Carabao Cup and FA Cup title.
The 55-year-old’s high-intensity 4-2-3-1 system could work in a Bayer Leverkusen side that focuses on quick transitions and high-tempo attacking play, which has led to huge success over the last two years.
Out of management since last October, ten Hag left United 14th in the Premier League - arguably in a better position than Ruben Amorim currently finds himself in.
Xavi Hernandez
Many German outlets have thrown the former Barcelona manager’s name into contention to replace Alonso this summer.
During his time in Spain, Xavi faced challenges but was able to forge great success.
In the Spaniard’s first full season in charge of Barca, he lifted the LaLiga title along with the Spanish Super Cup, showcasing his managerial talent and tactics.
Of course, Xavi was a largely respected figure in Catalonia from his playing days, having spent almost his entire career at Barcelona, making over 767 appearances for the club.
The 45-year-old’s philosophy would fit in perfectly at Leverkusen, with his ability to work with youngsters and develop them into world-class talent a huge plus.
Cesc Fabregas
The emergence and success of Italian side Como have taken many people by surprise.
Cesc Fabregas has impressed many during his time in Italy, having guided Como, not just to survival, but a possible top-half finish in the Serie A.
Although the former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder prefers to play with a structured build-up and short passing sequences, the 38-year-old also focuses on central dominance, which has worked well at Leverkusen under Alonso.
