Bayern Munich news: Harry Kane release clause tempting Premier League giants, Liverpool linked
Harry Kane has established himself as one of the most effective centre-forwards in world football since bursting onto the scene for Tottenham Hotspur during the 2014/15 season.
With his long wait for silverware looking to be coming to an end in the Bundesliga this season, questions are being raised over his future at Bayern Munich.
Transfer News Blitz writer Joe Matthews has explored what is next for the Englishman.
Premier League intrigue
Before his move to Germany, Kane received a lot of interest from Premier League clubs.
Manchester United have never denied their interest in the forward, but it was their cross-city rivals, Manchester City, that provided more concrete rumours.
Nevertheless, the arrivals of the Norwegian robot, Erling Haaland, in the summer of 2022 and Omar Marmoush this January have meant City are in little need of a striker.
For the 31-year-old himself, he sits just 47 goals off Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record of 260, and will surely know that just a couple of seasons should be enough to tip him over the line.
The clause in question
Kane’s release clause has specifically attracted heightened attention as of late for several reasons.
Firstly, English teams get a lowered fee of just £67million, which is set to drop further to £54million in January, according to TalkSport.
Whilst the former Spurs striker turns 32 in July, a player of his quality for that price in a crazy and inflated market could be a true steal.
Who could be in the running?
When you think of upper-end Premier League teams that need a striker, there are two that come to mind - Arsenal and Liverpool.
With the Gunners in desperate need of any kind of attacker due to their disastrous injury crisis, a striker of Kane’s calibre would certainly do the trick to get Mikel Arteta’s side back on track.
However, a Premier League return to his former club's fiercest rivals would not go down well in Tottenham, so a move to the 2024/25 league winners at Anfield may be a more likely outcome.
With Luis Diaz deployed up-front for the majority of this season, Arne Slot will be hoping to bring in a new centre-forward as he heads towards his second campaign at the helm of the Reds.
Kane would undeniably solve the striker ‘problem’ at Liverpool - if you can really call it that.
