Blackburn Rovers news: Valerian Ismael reluctant to replace Callum Brittain edges closer to transfer
Blackburn Rovers defender Callum Brittain has been linked with a move away from Ewood Park this summer.
With several EFL sides understood to be keeping tabs on the Englishman, who will likely leave Lancashire this summer.
Here, Transfer News Blitz writer Thomas Robinson delivers the latest on Brittain’s future in the North West.
Callum Brittain wanted by Middlesbrough
Callum Brittain in action for Blackburn Rovers.
Since arriving from Barnsley back in 2022, Brittain has been instrumental in Blackburn’s back line.
In 113 appearances for the Blue and Whites over a three-year spell, the defender has accomplished three goals and 13 assists.
Now, Rob Edwards’ Middlesbrough are keen to sign the 27-year-old.
Derby County have also been sniffing around the electric wing-back this summer, but it looks as though Boro are going to land a deal for Brittain.
Valerian Ismael ‘in no rush’
Valerian Ismael has certainly been very happy with Brittain’s performances since the Frenchman took over at Ewood Park.
However, the defender’s absence for Rovers’ pre-season friendly with Accrington Stanley has left supporters unsure of his future.
“We let this game pass, but next week we hope for clarity,” said Ismael.
“Some clubs are interested, but nothing is agreed yet. Callum is important for us, but financially, the club may need to make a deal.
“We made a big effort to renew Callum’s contract. He has another offer he wants to take.
“It’s nothing personal, in football, everyone has to be happy. Now it’s just a matter of time for it to go over the line.”
The Blackburn boss seemed coy when asked if the club would look to replace Brittain if the full-back does leave Ewood Park.
He said: “We have already got a right-back, so we are not in a rush at the minute.
“We are in a very good position. He’s a very promising player. Ryan [Alebiosu] is exactly the profile we need.”
Who could replace Callum Brittain?
Kristi Montgomery had a breakthrough year with Blackburn Rovers last term.
At the moment, Blackburn have two young right-backs who could easily become back-up or starters for them.
Ryan Alebiosu signed for the club last week, however, youngsters Leo Duru and Kristi Montgomery have proven to be decent at Championship level.
The latter of the two came into the first team for a few games last term during the club's injury crisis, and performed well in the friendly against Accrington Stanley. The young English full-back said: “This time last year, I was wondering about a loan to Marine. Now I’m with the first team.
“I’ve been at Blackburn since I was nine. This is the dream. I want to repay the gaffer’s trust. I’ve got to back myself.”
