Chelsea news: Blues frontrunners for youngster Arthur Avom, who has drawn comparisons to Premier League great

Chelsea are currently leading three Premier League clubs in the race to sign FC Lorient midfielder Arthur Avom in the summer transfer window.

Since the youngster is relatively unknown, Transfer News Blitz writer Dejan Johal has taken a deep dive into the midfielder and what the plan may be if he moves to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea linked with Arthur Avom

With many Chelsea fans keen for the club to sign proven, experienced players who will improve their starting lineup, the last thing they would want is to see another obscure young player linked to the club.

However, as per The Sun, the Blues are leading the race for Cameroonian midfielder Avom.

Scouts from Chelsea, Aston Villa, and West Ham have reportedly regularly attended his games and observed his performances throughout the season.

Who is Arthur Avom?

Born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, the 20-year-old central midfielder is currently playing his football in the second division of French football.

He is currently one of the stars of the FC Lorient team, making 20 appearances in Ligue 2 and playing over 2,300 minutes this season.

As well as playing in central midfield, Avom has also played in a more advanced and attacking role at times this campaign.

One of his major strengths is his power and ability to carry the ball forward, which shows as he has a dribble success rate of an impressive 63.3%, as well as winning 46 fouls for Lorient this season.

These key attributes show why Avom is often compared to Premier League legend Yaya Touré, due to the similarities in playing styles.

This strength of his would be key for Chelsea, as the Blues do not necessarily have a midfielder who consistently carries and drives the ball forward.

As well as his ball-carrying ability, the Cameroonian also has two goals and three assists to his name this season.

On top of this, the midfielder has made 143 recoveries and has a pass accuracy of 83.7%, which shows his versatility and his all-round ability.

Where would Arthur Avom fit into Chelsea’s plans?

Despite Avom’s clear talent, many supporters have questioned Chelsea’s plans for the Cameroon international

The Blues could reportedly send Avom straight to Strasbourg on loan, similar to the current status of highly rated Brazilian Andrey Santos.

Given Chelsea’s midfield depth, there is little belief that they will give first-team and Premier League opportunities to a 20-year-old who is currently playing in France's second division.

This has made many fans believe that this potential signing will be another player to be bought by the Blues to sell on in the future to make a profit.

However, there could be an opportunity for Avom to develop and become a permanent first-team player if he signs, due to his well-rounded attributes offering something different to Chelsea’s current crop in midfield.
