FPL tips: Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo set to be one of the best value Fantasy Premier League picks this season
Fantasy Premier League has undergone some huge changes this season, as players will now be able to score points through defensive contributions.
Clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles make up the criteria for a defensive contribution.
Defenders can earn two extra points for 10 defensive contributions, whereas midfielders get the points for 12.
Due to this new rule, several players are now expected to become a lot more popular this season.
Moises Caicedo set to score big
Will Moises Caicedo make your team?
FIFA Club World Cup star, Moises Caicedo, would have been a top points earner last season, with over 250 defensive contributions that would equate to 42 extra points.
That is equivalent to 14 assists and would have taken the Ecuadorian’s overall points tally to 140.
For reference, Crystal Palace star and popular FPL pick Eberechi Eze scored 148 points last term, where Caicedo would have outscored both Iliman Ndiaye and Emile Smith Rowe.
Defensive players to take the forefront
Caicedo is not the only player set to see huge gains from the new system.
At £5million, Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba stands as a good enabler and would have gained an additional 30 points last season.
Combined with a decent set of opening fixtures make the 21-year-old a very solid pick, with the Seagulls to face AFC Bournemouth, Everton and Fulham at the Amex.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson is another player getting plenty of attention.
The Englishman bagged two goals and six assists over 33 starts last season, and would have also earned an extra 36 defensive points.
Cheap midfielders allow for big spending
With the potential for strong budget options in midfield, several players and tactics become available for managers going into GW1.
One option is the triple premium option.
Budget midfielders would allow budget for all three of Cole Palmer, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah.
This tactic relies on the trio to maintain their output, and for the cheaper players to chip in each week.
Another tactic taking social media by storm is the GW1 bench boost.
This revolved around budget bench options with guaranteed minutes to contribute points in a gameweek that sees many big teams with favourable matchups.
Ultimately, this new rule change is one of the biggest that Fantasy Premier League has seen in years, and it allows for much more variation within managers’ squads.
Will you go for one of the big defensive contributors, or will you play it safe and go with the template picks instead?
