Liverpool news: Trent Alexander-Arnold confirms Anfield departure as Real Madrid move looms

Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has been an integral cog in Arne Slot’s seemingly unstoppable winning machine, as the Reds stormed to the Premier League title.

Whether it was that thunderous half-volley to snatch a late win against Leicester City, or the deflected equaliser to rescue a point at Villa Park, Alexander-Arnold has provided some hugely important - and memorable - moments this season.

A heartfelt goodbye

It was clear to see the emotion behind the defender’s announcement via his social media channels.

After all, Alexander-Arnold has spent the best part of 20 years at Liverpool, joining the Reds’ academy at the age of six.

He said: “This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.

“From the academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever,” he continued.

“I will forever be in debt to you all.

“I have never known anything else, and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally.”

What is that new challenge, though?

What is next for Trent Alexander-Arnold?

Well, it will come as no surprise to anyone that Alexander-Arnold is expected to join up with Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the full-back will sign a five-year deal at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Ofcourse, change will be rife in the Spanish capital this summer, with current boss Carlo Ancelotti expected to depart for the Brazil national team, and former Liverpool and Real midfielder Xabi Alonso favourite to take over Los Blancos.

Is Trent Alexander-Arnold a Liverpool legend?

While many on the red half of Merseyside will feel pain and anger towards Alexander-Arnold’s decision, it is hard to see past his achievements at Anfield.

Recency bias can sometimes dictate opinion, but Alexander-Arnold has been one of the best modern right-backs in the world for some time.

Looking at the stats, 353 appearances, 23 goals, 92 assists, and nine trophies - including two Premier League titles and a Champions League -  it would be hard to deny the homegrown talent legendary status.

Not to forget the moments that Alexander-Arnold has provided.

Who could forget that quick corner against Barcelona to complete arguably the best comeback in Champions League history?

Liverpool supporters may argue that the manner of Alexander-Arnold's departure has left a bitter taste in the mouth, and you can’t really blame them.

In his prime, Real would have needed a blank cheque to tempt the Reds into a sale, however, the Spaniards have been able to sign the full-back for free.

It is a hard question to pose - is Alexander-Arnold a Liverpool legend? - and one that we could be asking for years to come.

Something tells me we will see the Englishman in a Liverpool shirt again before the end of his career, though, but for now, a new adventure awaits.
