Real Madrid news: Carlo Ancelotti set to become Brazil head coach as Santiago Bernabéu exit nears
Following a crushing 3-2 defeat to rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has edged closer to leaving the Spanish capital.
The 65-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabéu for some time, but rumours intensified after Real were dumped out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal earlier this month.
Carlo Ancelotti to take over Brazil
The Italian has reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Brazil to become the national team’s new head coach, as per Fabrizio Romano.
The deal will be valid from June, before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off on June 14.
Ancelotti and Los Blancos are set to part ways on good terms, with formal steps expected to take place after the domestic season is finished in Spain.
Xabi Alonso favourite for Real Madrid hotseat
Bayer Leverkusen boss - and ex-Madrid midfielder - Xabi Alonso is Real’s preferred choice to take over from Ancelotti, according to Florian Plettenberg.
The Spaniard spent five years at the Santiago Bernabéu during his playing career, where he made 236 appearances.
Alonso made his first inroads into senior management in October 2022, when he took over Bundesliga side Leverkusen.
In little under three years, the 43-year-old has led his side to the DFB-Pokal, German Super Cup and Bundesliga title, in which they were unbeaten.
Die Werkself are hopeful that Alonso will stay at the BayArena, however, are exploring the coaching market as a precaution.
