Newcastle Utd analysis: Five players Eddie Howe could look to move on this summer, Nick Pope included

As the Premier League season draws to a close and the summer transfer window approaches, Eddie Howe and his team will need to move players on as they look to build for another season in the Champions League.

The Magpies have again impressed and had an extremely successful season, winning their first major trophy since 1955.

However, with several positions across the pitch still in need of improvement, Transfer News Blitz writer Adam Beresford looks at who should depart St. James’ Park this summer.

Callum Wilson

Over recent seasons, Callum Wilson has been hit by injury after injury, missing a whopping 191 days of action this season.

With the 33-year-old’s contract set to expire in June, it could be the right time to move on.

The striker has netted 48 times in all competitions during his time on Tyneside and played a huge role in securing the Magpies’ Champions League football back in 2023.

However, with Alexander Isak the obvious choice ahead of him, the Englishman has struggled to nail down regular minutes.

Jamaal Lascelles

Newcastle’s vice captain, Jamaal Lascelles, has been in the North East for almost 11 years, signing for the club back in August 2014.

The centre half was integral when the Magpies dropped down to the second tier in 2016, in a season which saw them gain promotion back to the Premier League with the Championship title in hand.

Joining Newcastle at the age of 20, Lascelles fit in straight away and hit the ground running.

After several injury concerns, the 31-year-old’s time on Tynsdie could be coming to an end, with centre-back partner Fabian Schär extending his contract for another year.

Martin Dúbravka or Nick Pope

Martin Dúbravka and Nick Pope have been fighting for the No.1 spot this season, with the Slovakian impressing during the latter's mid-season absence.

However, with increased talk of a move for newly promoted Burnley’s James Trafford, could one of Newcastle’s senior goalkeepers leave this summer?

The debate in between the sticks has been a big discussion for supporters - Pope’s shot-stopping skills have been praised, but his distribution has come under scrutiny.

Sean Longstaff

Geordie-born and local lad Sean Longstaff could be forced to move on to free up funds for the Toon Army this summer.

After an impressive comeback from his suspension, Sandro Tonali has slotted into the midfield effortlessly and has made a fantastic connection with Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.

The 27-year-old has previously been linked with a move away from the club to Manchester United and Everton.

Longstaff has written his name into Newcastle folklore for THAT night against Paris Saint-Germain and his brace in the 2023 Carabao Cup semi-final.

The midfielder will be fondly remembered by many if he is to depart St. James’ Park this summer.

Joe Willock

Similarly to Longstaff, Joe Willock has struggled to break back into the Newcastle side due to the sheer dominance and class of Howe’s midfield three.

The former Arsenal man has also struggled with injury issues of late, and has lacked the clincal edge in front of goal that he had during his initial loan spell at the club.

The 25-year-old bagged eight goals in his first season at Newcastle, but has only managed six goals in four years since.
