Man City news: Pep Guardiola eyeing move for AC Milan star Tijjani Reijnders
Manchester City hit another bump in the road as they were held to a 0-0 draw on Saturday to rock-bottom Southampton.
The Cityzens are fourth in the Premier League, with the club in a six-way battle for the remaining Champions League spots.
As Pep Guardiola looks ahead to the summer, the Spaniard has identified AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders as a top priority.
City keen on Tijjani Reijnders
The 26-year-old has played 34 times for the Rossoneri this season, scoring 10 goals and assisting a further four, making him one of Milan’s most crucial players.
As per The Telegraph, there is reportedly an ‘expectation’ that Reijnders’s potential departure would break AC’s club record sale of Kaka to Real Madrid for £57million.
With key player Kevin De Bruyne set to leave Man City at the end of the season, and Ilkay Gundogan and Mateo Kovacic ageing, the Dutchman could be the perfect replacement.
Where would Tijjani Reijnders fit in?
Although Guardiola has a very strong squad, Reijnders could fit into several roles in the Spaniard’s system.
The most likely position the Dutch international would be deployed is the eight role, either side of the holding midfielder.
Reijnders, whose passing range and ability to make late runs into the box is similar to that of Bernardo Silva, would slot perfectly into the role.
However, the Dutchman could also fit into a more defensive position.
Not seen as a typical six like Rodri, we know that Guardiola prefers to use a mobile player at the base of his midfield, with Rico Lewis featuring there this season.
Playing deeper would allow Reijnders to dictate play, especially against teams in a low block.
City are also reportedly keen on Nottingham Forest attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White and German international Florian Wirtz.
