Newcastle Utd news: Eddie Howe ready to battle European elite for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia
Following their Champions League qualification, Newcastle United are looking to start strong in the transfer window.
The Magpies secured a top-five finish in the Premier League on the final day of the season, despite a 1-0 loss to Everton at St. James’ Park.
Eddie Howe is looking to strengthen across the pitch for another season on the elite stage, and goalkeeper Joan Garcia could be the starting point.
Newcastle United linked with Joan Garcia
The Espanyol shot stopper has attracted attention from local rivals Barcelona, but reports have suggested that the 24-year-old would prefer a move to the Premier League.
Arsenal and Manchester United are also understood to be keen on a deal for the Olympic gold medallist.
The Spaniard ended the season with the most saves in LaLiga with 146 and was awarded Espanyol’s player of the season award
Newcastle have also been linked with Burnley’s James Trafford, however, discussions have gone quiet, and Garcia, who has a £21milion release clause, could now be the focus.
The possible signing could allow the Magpies to move either Nick Pope or Martin Dubravka on and free some money for a potential huge summer window.
Joan Garcia speaks out on his future
Spanish radio station Tot Gira asked the Spanish keeper about his future, however, Garcia remained coy.
He said: “At the end of the day, in football, news is coming out all the time.
“Things are coming out, until things become a reality, it's not always the truth, but anyway, as I'm telling you, I'm very calm.
“Whatever needs to be decided, I'll definitely think about it a lot with my people and choose what will be best for me.”
If the Tyneside club could secure the transfer, it would be Eddie Howe's first signing since the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell.
