Man City news: Pep Guardiola eyes Rayan Cherki deal as Florian Wirtz edges towards Liverpool move
After a disappointing season in which Manchester City failed to win silverware for the first time in eight years, the Mancunians are looking to rebuild over the summer.
Pep Guardiola is keen on bringing in Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki as Kevin De Bruyne’s replacement, following the Belgian’s departure after 10 years with the club.
The 21-year-old is expected to leave the French side this summer and has a release clause worth around £20million.
Manchester City begin approach for Rayan Cherki
Man City have held initial talks with Rayan Cherki, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The attacking midfielder has become one of Guardiola’s top targets this summer, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz seemingly Liverpool-bound for a club-record fee.
The French U21 international has impressed this season for Lyon with 12 goals and 20 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions, which has gathered the interest of several clubs across Europe.
He has risen through the ranks at Lyon’s academy system and has proved to be a key attacking threat, with excellent dribbling and an eye for a pass.
Should he move to the Etihad Stadium, it would be a big step up for the youngster as City look for long-term replacements ahead of the new season.
How would Rayan Cherki fare at Manchester City?
With several attacking talents already at the club, the midfielder might have a difficult time initially breaking through the first team.
With the signing of Omar Marmoush in January and the additions of Jeremy Doku and Savinho over recent years, Cherki would have to establish himself in a star-studded squad.
The Frenchman is comfortable playing in both wide positions and in the number 10 role, which he has thrived in the most at Lyon.
There has been criticism of Guardiola’s playing style, nullifying the creativity of the likes of Jack Grealish, who has struggled during his time at the Etihad.
Even former Premier League player of the season Phil Foden has struggled to find consistency and live up to the same expectations this season.
If used correctly, Cherki will develop and has the capability to flourish in City colours.

Other Midfield Targets
City have looked at Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, who have both impressed at their respective clubs this season.
Should a Cherki deal fail to materialise, there are other options on the table for Guardiola’s side.
It is clear that City are looking ahead as their squad continues to re-shape and they look to get back into the habit of winning silverware again.
