Arsenal News: Gunners targeting ‘highly rated’ Espanyol and Spain goalkeeper Joan Garcia
Arsenal are interested in signing Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia at the end of the season.
With two games to go in the Premier League, it has been yet another frustrating season for Mikel Arteta’s side, as injuries to key players throughout the campaign have meant they have gone another year without silverware.
The Gunners have multiple transfer targets lined up, including Garcia, as they look to rebuild over the summer.
However, they are set to face competition from one of Europe’s biggest clubs for the Spaniard's signature, who has an estimated value of £25million.
Arsenal and Barcelona in the running
Spanish source ‘AS’ make Arsenal the favourite to get the deal over the line, but Barcelona are also keen.
Hansi Flick could look to replace Wojciech Szczesny, whose future at Camp Nou is in doubt.
The Spanish side are closing in on the La Liga title, and Garcia would be close to home should he make the move.
European finalists Manchester United and Chelsea could also make an approach for the 24-year-old to find a solution to the goalkeeping troubles they have faced this season.
Both clubs are still in the running to play Champions League football next season, which could attract the Spaniard, who would want to play regularly.
Espanyol forced to sell
Espanyol are currently going through financial strain with reports claiming the club need to raise £15million in sales ahead of the summer window.
Arsenal could convince the Spanish side to accept a reduced fee from the £25million release clause set to get the deal over the line.
It’s been a rough past couple of years for Los Periquitos as they have been relegated and promoted twice since 2020.
Espanyol sit 16th in LaLiga, five points clear of the relegation zone with three games to go, and are expected to survive the drop.
However, the club’s future remains in jeopardy.

How good is Joan Garcia?
Last year’s Olympic gold medalist has made the most saves in LaLiga this season.
The shot-stopper is also great with his feet, which is why he is so sought after.
Having been with Espanyol throughout youth level and making his senior debut in 2022, Garcia has been a regular in between the sticks.
Although his current contract expires in 2028, the club’s circumstances could lead to his departure from the RCDE stadium.
A side like Arsenal could use the goalkeeper depth, and Garcia could be a long-term investment for the Gunners.
He would provide much-needed competition to fellow Spaniard David Raya, who has been Arsenal’s No.1 for two consecutive seasons now.
