Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim reignites interest in Aston Villa and Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez

Manchester United have reignited their interest in World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez, as their search for a new goalkeeper continues.

The Red Devils have certainly endured a less-than-impressive start to the season.

Defeat to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League was followed by a draw against Fulham and a last-minute win over Burnley.

Not to forget that Ruben Amorim’s men were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two minnows Grimsby Town.

One point of contention at Old Trafford has been the disappointing performances of shot stoppers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.

This has prompted United to look to the summer transfer market for a new first-choice goalkeeper.

Manchester United want Emiliano Martinez

While the Red Devils have been working on a deal to sign Belgian stopper Senne Lammens, negotiations are thought to have stalled.

United have since gone back in for Aston Villa keeper Martinez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Argentine has reportedly already agreed on personal terms at Old Trafford, while Manchester United have approached the Villans.

The 32-year-old was left out of Villa’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace by Unai Emery on Sunday, having told the club he wants to join Man United.

Ironically, Aston Villa are said to be looking into a deal for Lammens as a replacement for Martinez.

Villa have also opened discussions over a move for wantaway United forward Jadon Sancho, however, that would be on a separate deal.

How good is Emiliano Martinez?

Martinez has come into his own since leaving the Emirates Stadium for Villa Park in September 2020.

The Argentine has firmly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet, having played a huge part in Aston Villa’s European success.

The former Arsenal shot stopper kept eight clean sheets in 37 Premier League appearances last term.

It is not just at club level that Martinez has impressed, though.

On the international stage, Martinez has been integral to Argentina’s dominance, winning the 2022 Qatar World Cup and two Copa America titles.

If Manchester United can get a deal for Matinez done in time, Amorim’s goalkeeping woes could finally be a thing of the past.
