Chelsea news: Enzo Maresca ready to reignite interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan

Chelsea are set to rekindle their interest in AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan in January, following Robert Sanchez’s poor performance against Manchester United.

The Spaniard was sent off after three minutes for a reckless challenge on United forward Bryan Mbuemo.

Ruben Amorim’s men were able to make the most of their man advantage, as goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro sealed a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.

The Blues have had an inconsistent start to their Premier League campaign, but sit sixth in the table.

Enzo Maresca’s side next face a trip to League One Lincoln City on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup.

Will Chelsea move for Mike Maignan?

The Blues have been interested in Maignan for some time, having explored a deal earlier in the year.

Now, ahead of the January transfer window, the Fenchman is understood to be back on the radar at Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Express.

Maignan would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement in the winter, with his AC Milan contract set to expire next July.

If the 30-year-old walks at the end of his current deal at the San Siro, Massimiliano Allegri's side could be forced into a cheap sale.

Of course, Maignan could leave for nothing in the summer if Milan decide not to sell.

Mike Maignan off to a strong start

Since moving to Italy in 2021, Maignan has gone from strength to strength at the San Siro, where he has firmly established himself as France’s first-choice shot stopper.

Maignan had huge shoes to fill in Milan, having been brought in to replace current Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It is clear to see why Chelsea are so keen, with the French international on top form so far this season.

The Milan captain has kept three clean sheets in four appearances across all competitions so far this term.

However, Maignan was forced off with a calf issue in AC Milan’s 1-0 victory against Bologna and is out for the foreseeable future.

Could we soon see a new face between the sticks at Stamford Bridge?
